Inviting someone to a party

A: Hello, Stu. How are you?

B: Hey, Sara! I’m well thank you. How about you?

A: I couldn’t be better. I’m having a party this weekend and would love for you to come if you can make it.

B: That would be great! Where will it be held?

A: We’re having a small party on the rooftop of my apartment. Come around 6pm.

B: That sounds like fun! Do you want me to bring anything?

A: I will be making plenty of food for everyone. If you’d like to bring something, then perhaps you can bring some wine or something to drink.

B: Is there a special dress code?

A: No, it’s just a casual get together.

B: I can’t wait! How many people are you expecting?

A: Probably around 10 including yourself.

B: Okay great! I will see you on Saturday!

A: Lovely. Thanks, Stu! See you then.

Asking to join in a game

A: Hi.

B: Hello.

A: What game are you playing?

B: We’re playing basketball.

A: May I join your game?

B: Sure, we could use an extra player anyway. Join our side because we are one player down.

A: Great, thanks for letting me play.

B: Do you know the rules?

A: Sure, I know most of the rules. Are there any rules in your game I should know about?

B: All the usual rules. You can watch as we play and work it out. It’s just a fun game so we don’t take it too seriously.

A: Cool, I can handle that. Thanks again for letting me join in.

Buying sports shoes

A: Hi.

B: Hello.

A: I was wondering if you can help me?

B: Sure, what can I help you with?

A: I need some new shoes for running.

B: Yes, I can help you with that. What type of running do you do, track, road or trail?

A: I run on the road mostly.

B: How many kilometers do you run each week?

A: I run 20 to 30 kilometers every week.

B: Have you had any injuries in the past?

A: I have had some knee pain in the past.

B: You will need a shoe with good support and cushioning.

A: Which shoes would be most suitable?

B: In my opinion, these two models would be best for your needs.

A: Okay, they look good. Why are they the best?

B: They both offer lots of support and cushioning. They’re both great for anyone that experiences knee pain.

A: What are the differences between them?

B: There isn’t a lot of difference between them. They’re both great for running lots of kilometers so it comes down to which one you like better.

A: Do you have them in size 10?

B: Yes, I’ll get you both models in size 10. You can try both of them and decide which one feels more comfortable.

A: Okay, thank you.

B: Here’s both models in size 10. Try the first pair on and go for a walk around the store.

A: Okay, this pair feels quite secure on my feet and soft to walk in.

B: Do you feel any movement of the shoe when you’re walking around?

A: No, they feel great. I’ll just do another lap of the store and then I’ll try on the other pair.

B: Okay, here’s the other pair.

A: They feel great too, slightly looser than the first pair but they still feel secure.

B: Go for a walk in them and see what you think.

A: They feel good, but, I prefer the fit of the first pair.

B: Okay, would you like to buy the first pair?

A: Yes, please. I will take the first pair.

B: No problem, I’ll pack them up for you and you can pay at the cash register.

A: Thank you for your help.

B: You’re welcome, have a nice day.

A: Hi, how can I help you?

B: I’m interesting in buying a new MacBook.

A: Sure! Did you have a size in mind?

B: Yes, probably a 13 Inch MacBook.

A: Here, have a play on our display model. See if you like it.

B: Okay, thanks.

A: Are you looking to purchase the MacBook for business purposes or personal use?

B: Business mostly. I will be using the MacBook predominantly for my business needs.

A: We have Apple payment plans for businesses. Here’s a flyer with information on our payment plans.

B: Thanks. How does it work with repairs?

A: If you need repairs and you are still under warranty, just bring the MacBook back to the Apple Store and we will fix it.

B: What if it’s not under warranty?

A: Our Mac Geniuses at the Genius Bar can still help you diagnose the problem for free. There is a fee for fixes that are outside of warranty. The fee varies depending on what is required to fix the problem.

B: Do you offer any discounts?

A: We have special pricing for Education. You would be eligible if you were a student or teacher. You would need to provide evidence of this.

B: Okay, I am going to think about it.

A: No problem. You can also order your MacBook online from the Apple Store online. Standard delivery is free and won’t cost you anything.

Pitching your business services

S: Hello, Christopher. Thanks for coming today, I appreciate your time.

C: Hello Sara, it’s my pleasure.

S: Let’s start by learning more about your business Christopher. What do you do and what are your current challenges?

C: Okay. No problem. I am a Tailor and I design and produce custom suits for men. My current challenge is that we get lots of orders around wedding time, however, we have really quiet months where we need to make more sales.

S: I see. Can you tell me what you are currently doing to market your business? How do customers learn about you?

C: Word of mouth. Most of our customers are referrals from existing customers. We have a website and social media pages, however, we aren’t very active.

S: Do you sell any suits or products online?

C: No, we don’t. I wouldn’t even know where to start with that.

S: What would success for your business look like to you Christopher? Explain to me, the ideal scenario.

C: Success would be having a constant flow of sales so I don’t have to worry about money all the time.

S: What have you tried in the past that worked?

C: In the past, we did some letterbox drops that offered a discount off a tailored suit. That was an expensive campaign and we didn’t get many sales from it.

S: What have you tried that has worked?

C: We have a referral program, where you earn points towards store credits for every paying customer you refer. Customers like that and tell their friends about it. We need more people to know about it.

S: Based off the information you provided, I think there are a few approaches to help you get more customers and more sales.

C: Let’s hear them.

S: Firstly, I would recommend that we update your social media pages and website with a modern design. This will help attract more customers than the current dated designs.

C: How much do you charge for social media design and website design?

S: We have different packages that will suit your budget. I have the list of prices to send to you after this call.

C: Ok, great.

S: Secondly, I would recommend that we create a Facebook advertising campaign to get more customers into your shop. We can target males within a radius of your store, who are engaged. They would be more likely to be looking for a suit.

C: Can you do that?

S: Yes, we can. The campaigns will be focused on increasing the number of new customers. Then we can integrate your referral program into the campaign also.

C: Sounds great. Will you include the price for that in your proposal?

S: Yes, I will. I believe that by updating your brand online and creating more local awareness of your store through regular advertising campaigns, we can help you achieve your goal of more consistent sales throughout the year.

C: How long will it take to get everything up and running?

S: Based off the campaigns and set up you require, we need between 2-4 weeks. I have included a timeline for you in the proposal as well.

C: Great. I will read through your proposal with my business manager and contact you if we have any questions.

S: Thank you, Christopher. I will give you a call in a couple of days to see what you think and answer any queries you may have.

Video Transcript: English conversation topics: Making a complaint

Are you interested in expanding your English conversation topics? In this video, I’ll share with you a simple, useful English conversation that you can use immediately to start learning English quickly and without overwhelm. Stay tuned.

C: Hello, ABC Internet Customer Service, how may I direct your call?

D: Hi, I want to register a complaint regarding my internet service.

C: I’m sorry to hear that. What has been the problem?

D: My connection has been repeatedly dropping-out and, when it is connected, the speeds are very slow.

C: Let me check to see if there is a reported issue with our network in your area. I need your client number, do you have it?

D: Yes, my client number is 7654-321.

C: Thank you. The system does not show any maintenance in your area.

D: So the problem must be on my end.

C: I can’t tell from here. I’ll get a technician to come to your house and take a look.

D: Okay, how soon can they come out?

C: I can get someone out there between 8am and 12pm tomorrow. Will someone be home at that time?

D: Yes, I will be home.

C: Okay, our technician will arrive sometime between 8am and 12pm tomorrow.

D: Thank you, I’ll see them tomorrow.
